Killer Speed

Excited chatter over the local fire department's airwaves lead me to this scene late Sunday night, not far from my home.

Elizabeth firefighters had cut the people from the twisted car by the time I arrived. The Star-Ledger had the story in Tuesday's paper:

A high school baseball star from Elizabeth was killed and his girlfriend injured in a car accident Sunday night in the city.

Yonder Reyes, 18, was driving west on Park Avenue near Princeton Road around 11 p.m. Sunday, said Capt. Jon Chisholm, and was traveling at a "considerable rate of speed" in a 2003 BMW. He lost control of the car and struck a utility pole, severing it, and then hit a tree. The car spun about 180 degrees and downed a pull-box fire alarm, Chisholm said.
